Captain Harmanpreet Kaur's unbeaten 71 off 43 balls powered Mumbai Indians (MI) to a seven-wicket win over Gujarat Giants, as they chased down 193, the second-highest successful chase in WPL history.
Harmanpreet paced the chase to near perfection, finding support from Amanjot Kaur (40) and Nicola Carey (38*), as MI extended their perfect head-to-head record against Giants to 8-0. MI also maintained their remarkable streak of never losing a WPL match when Harmanpreet scores a fifty, this being the 10th such instance.
Giants posted 192/5 thanks to late cameos from Georgia Wareham (43*) and Bharti Fulmali (36* off 15), including 39 runs in the last two overs. However, MI's chase was anchored by Harmanpreet's masterclass, with Carey providing the finishing touches in a match-winning partnership of 84*.
Historical Milestone: Ayushi Soni became the first player to be retired out in WPL history, making way for Fulmali's explosive finish.
Okay, so the 6th game of the Women’s Premier League 2026 went down at DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai, and it was a scorcher between Gujarat Giants Women and Mumbai Indians Women. It was a fast-paced game, some great plays, and a couple of weird moments, but Mumbai Indians pulled off an awesome seven-wicket win, chasing down 193 runs. That makes it 8-0 against Gujarat Giants – they just can’t seem to beat them!
Gujarat Giants Women set a massive target of 193, which turned out to be the second-highest chase ever in WPL history. But Mumbai Indians were up for it. Harmanpreet Kaur was amazing, scoring 71 not out off just 43 balls, giving them that solid, aggressive push they needed. She teamed up with Amanjot Kaur and Nicola Carey and they totally controlled the chase. Amanjot chipped in with 40 runs from 26 balls, and Nicola Carey finished strong with 38 not out from 23 deliveries. That partnership between Harmanpreet and Carey was key – it swung the whole game, even though MI had a shaky start.
MI went hard, ran well between wickets, and got some good support in the field. Harmanpreet got her fifty off 33 balls, showing how good she is at pacing a chase, keeping her strike rate high and smashing the bad balls. They got to the target in 19.2 overs, with four balls left – pretty good game management.
Gujarat Giants Women started well, with Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney attacking the MI bowlers. Devine went out early for 8, but Mooney got a quick 33. Then Kanika Ahuja and Ashleigh Gardner kept the momentum going, getting the Giants to 99 for 3 by the 10th over. Georgia Wareham was 43 not out, and Bharti Fulmali smashed 36 runs in 15 balls at the end, helping Gujarat get to a pretty good 192 for 5.
But here’s where it got strange: Ayushi Soni became the first player in WPL history to retire herself out! She was struggling, with 11 runs in 14 balls, so she just walked off to let Bharti Fulmali carry on. It was a bold move, and people are arguing about whether it’s a good tactic or bad for the game. Either way, it kind of worked, because Fulmali’s hitting got Gujarat to a competitive total.
Plus, Gujarat Giants dropped three important catches from Harmanpreet Kaur, which really hurt them. Those missed chances showed how much pressure there is when you’re chasing a big score at night, and it shows how important good fielding is in T20.
Harmanpreet Kaur deservedly won Player of the Match for her amazing innings. She hit seven fours and two sixes in her 71 not out – a perfect mix of attack and timing. And Cricinfo gave Nicola Carey their MVP award – she scored 38 runs off 23 balls and took 1/36 with the ball, getting 78.08 points on their Impact List. She showed everyone why she’s so good this season.
Shabnim Ismail and Kashvee Gautam bowled pretty well. Ismail took 1/25 in four overs, and Gautam got 1/33, trying to keep MI’s hitters quiet. But Harmanpreet and Carey were just too good, and they couldn’t stop the record chase.
This match was big for a few reasons. Mumbai Indians kept up their perfect record against Gujarat Giants, winning 8 in a row. Harmanpreet Kaur has now won 10 times when she’s scored a fifty in WPL matches. And that chase of 193 runs was the second-highest ever in the league, showing how good the MI batting is and how competitive the tournament is.
Bharti Fulmali’s crazy strike rate of 240 and Georgia Wareham’s 130 runs were also good for Gujarat, even though they lost. And Soni retiring herself out was just a weird, unique thing to see.
Everyone was talking about Ayushi Soni retiring herself after the game. Some people think it’s a smart tactic, but others think it’s against the spirit of the game and could be abused in the future. Also, Gujarat Giants dropping those catches of Harmanpreet made people wonder if they’re good enough in the field under pressure. People are asking if it was just individual mistakes or if there’s something wrong with the whole team’s fielding setup.
The key moment was when MI lost those early wickets, and Harmanpreet and Amanjot came together. Their 72-run partnership got MI back on track and set them up for that record chase. Nicola Carey’s hitting at the end made sure MI kept the momentum going, and Gujarat’s bowling just couldn’t break that partnership. In the 16th over, Carey hit five boundaries off Renuka Singh, which really swung the game.
Harmanpreet timed her fifty perfectly, attacking the bad balls and staying in control. She was a great leader on the field, making sure they ran well between the wickets and that her partners were contributing to the chase.
Mumbai Indians were really smart with their captaincy and tactics. They chose to field first, and their bowlers did a good job early on, even though Gujarat got a lot of runs at the end. MI’s batters were aggressive but smart with their shots, balancing risk and reward. Putting Harmanpreet in at the right time, followed by Carey, showed how well they understood the game.
Even though they lost, Gujarat Giants Women showed they’re tough. Kanika Ahuja’s 35 from 18 balls and Ashleigh Gardner’s 20 showed they have a good top order that can handle pressure. Georgia Wareham’s 43 not out and Bharti Fulmali’s hitting at the end showed how much depth they have, but their fielding errors cost them.
What it Means for the Table
Mumbai Indians’ win puts them on four points, the same as Gujarat Giants Women, but they have a better net run rate. It shows that MI are one of the most consistent teams in the tournament, while Gujarat Giants need to figure out how to defend those big totals. This result is going to matter when it comes to playoffs, and it gives Mumbai Indians a lot of confidence.
The fans went crazy over Mumbai Indians’ chase. Everyone was talking about Harmanpreet Kaur’s innings, praising her leadership. Nicola Carey also got a lot of love, and people are still debating whether Soni retiring herself out was a good move or not. Overall, people think this game showed a lot about tactics, hitting, and how the Women’s Premier League is improving.
That 6th match between Gujarat Giants Women and Mumbai Indians Women will be remembered for Harmanpreet Kaur’s awesome batting, the smart tactics, and that record-setting chase. Mumbai Indians keep beating Gujarat Giants, and this game was just another example of how exciting T20 cricket can be. With big hits, smart plays, and a few controversies, this match showed how exciting, unpredictable, and competitive the Women’s Premier League is. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
