A career-best T20 performance with the ball from Tom Curran has ended Adelaide Strikers' season and kept Melbourne Stars' hopes of a BBL finals double chance alive, but a late blow on the thumb to skipper Marcus Stoinis has Stars and Australia nervous ahead of the T20 World Cup with the allrounder likely to get it scanned.
Curran took 4 for 10 in a stunning display of new-ball bowling to register the best figures of his 256-game T20 career. Mitchell Swepson also bagged three wickets as Strikers folded for 83, their second-lowest total in the BBL, despite batting out 19.3 overs.
Stoinis, having entered at 43 for 3, had played nicely for his 23 not out from 20 but with two runs to win he was hit on the right thumb by Jamie Overton and immediately walked off. "I think I'll probably be getting the scan, but I think it's okay," Stoinis said post-match.
Historical Milestones: This was the lowest match aggregate (169) in Strikers-Stars T20 history. Matthew Short broke the record for most T20s as captain for Adelaide Strikers (29), while Sam Harper played his 100th BBL match.
So, the Strikers and Stars went head-to-head in the 34th match of the Big Bash League 2025/26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on January 13, 2026. It was a night game, 20 overs each, and the Stars crushed it, winning by six wickets and easily chasing down a small target of 84 with plenty of balls to spare. Tom Curran was the star, getting 4 wickets for just 10 runs. He got Player of the Match and topped Cricinfo’s MVP list with 112.11 points. What a legend!
The Strikers batted first and only managed 83 runs in 19.3 overs – one of their worst scores ever in the BBL. Cameron Boyce scored 20 off 18 balls, and Liam Scott chipped in with 18 off 20, but the other batters, like Alex Carey, Matthew Short, Chris Lynn, and Jason Sangha, didn’t do much. Curran, Mitchell Swepson, Marcus Stoinis, and Peter Siddle bowled really well and put the pressure on. Getting Carey and Lynn out early messed up the innings, and even though some of the lower-order batters tried, the Strikers couldn’t get enough runs.
Curran’s 4/10 was the key to the Stars’ win. He bowled really accurately and made the most of the tricky pitch at the MCG, which had inconsistent bounce and movement. He used cutters and wobble seams, which messed with the Strikers’ top and middle order. By the 10th over, the Strikers were struggling at 40 for 5. Swepson and Stoinis helped Curran by taking some important wickets, so the Strikers never recovered. Curran’s awesome bowling showed how important fast bowling is in T20 cricket and how he can take control in big moments.
Some records were broken during the game. Short played his 29th T20 match for the Strikers, passing Travis Head for the most as captain. The total of 169 runs was the lowest ever for a Strikers vs Stars game in BBL history. The Strikers also had one of their lowest scores, which shows how well the Stars bowled. All these records made the game even more memorable.
The Stars didn’t have it totally easy chasing 84. Sam Harper, playing his 100th BBL match, got out early to Scott, leaving the Stars at 12 for 1. Campbell Kellaway also got out cheaply. Thomas Rogers played a solid innings, scoring 32 off 40 balls to get the chase back on track. Stoinis had to retire hurt on 23 not out after getting hit on the thumb by Jamie Overton. But he said after the match that it was just a precaution and he should be fine.
There were some controversial moments in the game, mostly about the DRS decisions. Lynn reviewed a decision on a Curran ball that hit his pads, and it was overturned, showing how close things can be in T20 cricket. Haris Rauf took a diving catch to get Carey out, but there was debate because the ball might have been thrown before he finished his roll. The third umpire said it was fine. These things showed how important technology and umpiring are.
The MCG pitch was difficult for both batters and bowlers. Even though it didn’t have much grass, the bounce and movement were inconsistent, which made it hard for the Strikers to score runs. The Stars’ bowlers, especially Curran, used these conditions really well, while the Strikers had trouble rotating the strike. The match showed how important it is to bowl strategically, place the field well, and adapt to the pitch in T20 cricket.
Besides Curran, other players did well. Scott’s 2/12 and 18 runs helped the Strikers. Swepson took three wickets to clean up the lower order, and Stoinis showed how cool he is under pressure before he got hurt. Rogers played a smart innings to guide the Stars to the win. These performances and the team’s bowling and game plan were important for the Stars’ win.
The Stars’ win puts them in a better spot on the BBL points table, so they still have a good chance of finishing in the top two. The Strikers, with only six points, are pretty much out of the finals. The result also affects how the players feel, their fitness, and how they prepare for future games, especially with Stoinis’ thumb injury. The match was a reminder that every performance matters in the BBL.
The 34th match of the BBL 2025/26 was a great example of T20 cricket. Curran’s awesome bowling, the Strikers’ batting issues, Stoinis’ injury, and the DRS drama made it one to remember. Records were broken, like Short’s captaincy milestone and the lowest Strikers vs Stars score, and the game showed how much individual performances and strategy matter in cricket.
