
South Africa Women crushed Ireland Women by 74 runs in the second ODI of their tour. The game was at St George’s Park in Gqeberha. South Africa chose to bat first and then showed off some great batting, solid bowling, and took home an easy win.
The second ODI started at 10:00 AM local time. South Africa Women won the toss and decided to bat first, which turned out to be a smart move because the field was good for scoring runs early on and stayed that way all day.
South Africa Women put up a huge 375 for 6 in 50 overs, averaging 7.5 runs per over. Captain Laura Wolvaardt was awesome, scoring 124 runs off 111 balls with 19 fours.
Sune Luus also played great, with 114 runs off 113 balls, including 13 fours and a six. Together with Wolvaardt, Luus helped the team dominate. Dane van Niekerk sped things up at the end, smashing 88 runs off just 47 balls with 13 fours and three sixes.
Tazmin Brits and Lara Goodall got started but didn’t last long, while Miane Smit and Karabo Meso finished the innings. Ireland also gave away 26 extra runs, including 18 wides.
Jane Maguire was the best bowler for Ireland, taking 3 wickets for 75 runs. Aimee Maguire got two wickets, including the big one of Laura Wolvaardt, and Arlene Kelly bowled well, only allowing 59 runs in 10 overs.
Still, Ireland’s bowlers struggled to keep up with South Africa’s scoring.
Ireland Women tried hard, scoring 301 before getting all out in 47.5 overs. Sarah Forbes was out for zero, but captain Gaby Lewis scored 45 off 52 balls.
Amy Hunter played well with 64 from 66 balls, hitting six fours and a six. Orla Prendergast was the top performer, scoring 97 runs from 86 balls with 10 fours and two sixes.
Leah Paul helped with 36 runs, and Arlene Kelly added a quick 20 off 14 balls. But Ireland couldn’t keep up.
Leah Jones led the South Africa attack with three wickets, while Miane Smit and Nondumiso Shangase each took two wickets. Sune Luus bowled well, only allowing 52 runs in 10 overs and getting a wicket at an important time.
The fielding was solid.
Ireland Women ended up with 301, losing by 74 runs. South Africa Women showed they have great batting and know how to play smart. Wolvaardt and Luus had amazing centuries. Prendergast nearly had a century for Ireland.
This win puts South Africa Women in a strong spot in the series and shows Ireland what they need to work on, like bowling and getting a good start with their batting.
